'The crystal heart' by Sophie Masson

Recruit Kasper Bator from ‘Fish-the-Moon’ is seconded to the Tower Guard on a mysterious island where an evil witch has been interred.  He is determined to make his family proud and do his job to the best of his ability.  But when he accidentally catches a glimpse of the occupant of the tower he begins to doubt the things that he and his fellow soldiers have been told.  Helping the ‘witch’ escape is not something he planned to do, but when he overheard someone discussing her execution scheduled for the day she turned eighteen, he felt he had no other choice.
